Benchmarking

Compliance Experts is an official ENERGY STAR Partner. We handle energy data procurement, gross floor area measurement, Portfolio Manager setup, space type selection, and special use type additions so your benchmarking meets the exact requirements of your building performance standard.

Requirements

Benchmarking has been required for larger commercial buildings in Colorado since 2021. Benchmarking data is due by June 1 each year for Energize Denver and by November 1 for Building Performance Colorado. Is your benchmarking optimized for your specific ordinance, so it protects you from future penalties?

Energize Denver

Commercial and multifamily buildings 25,000 sq ft and larger submit benchmarking through the Energize Denver portal by June 1 each year. A $2,000 penalty applies to each violation, including a missed submission, uncorrected errors, or missing third-party data verification. Verification by an accredited professional was first required with the June 1, 2026 submission. Energize Denver program details

Building Performance Colorado

Commercial and multifamily buildings 50,000 sq ft and larger must meet the state benchmarking and performance requirements. Benchmarking data is shared with the Colorado Energy Office by November 1 each year, with a $100 program fee and a $400 Building Decarbonization Enterprise fee. Penalties are up to $577 for the first violation and $2,300 for each subsequent violation. Building Performance Colorado details

Boulder Building Performance Ordinance

Existing commercial buildings 20,000 sq ft and larger, and new commercial construction 10,000 sq ft and larger, must benchmark under the BPO. Data is due June 1 each year. Non-compliance can be fined at $0.0025 per sq ft per day, up to $1,000 per day.
